Smith is from a family of artists and performers. She was born to a Taiwanese mother and American father. Being bi-racial yet passing as white has profoundly affected her life and art. Her childhood was spent moving frequently, which continued into much of her adult life. A sense of placelessness, but one often injected with a sense of lightness permeates her work. Initially an abstract painter, she turned to representational painting after many solo walks in snowy woods and farmlands at a Finnish artist residency. She also has a career in front of the camera as a commercial actor/model. Smith resides in New York City. Smith has exhibited at galleries across the United States including Metro Pictures Gallery, NYC, Trestle Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, Equity Gallery, NYC, Slingluff Gallery, Philadelphia, PA, the Hugh McPeck Gallery at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, AK, and bG Gallery, Santa Monica, CA
