About The Artwork

This work printed on Hahnemühle paper, was inspired by the visit to David Gareji, the rock-cut 6th century, functioning monastery with preserved unique frescos that are considered masterpiece of Georgian Medieval Art. I try to connect past with the present and do it through my own technique combining photography and oil painting in a certain way, producing the digital output that could be printed on any surface. Why photography and painting? Photography generates an image, which after the moment of exposure, becomes the past. Painting, on the other hand, is a process where oil – a tangible medium - crafts new reality suggesting the present.

I am a Georgian American artist. Currently I live and work in Tbilisi, Georgia. I explores the ambiguity of unknown spaces and experiences through constructed images with digital output, using painting and photography as my main media. I have exhibited in London, New York, Washington, DC, Naples. In 2023, I had my first solo exhibition in Tbilisi, Georgia at the invitation of the Chubinashvili National Research Centre for Georgian Art History and Heritage Preservation. I studied oil painting at the New York Academy of Art and Leah Lopez’s Atelier in NYC. I got my BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the Art Academy London, MPP from Princeton University, and MA from Tbilisi State Institute of Foreign Languages. I have been selected for a 2022-24 Liberty Specialty Market (LSM) Art Award programme and my work is on display at the LSM offices in London. Movement, places and people who live outside their country of origin inspire my creativity. I am interested in how people adjust to change, how they often experience the present as a memory from the past searching for familiar in the unknown.
