Amidst the historical expanse of Bowring Park (St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) emerges a tribute of profound significance—the bronze statue of a woodland Caribou. Crafted by the skilled hands of Captain Basil Gotto, this masterful creation stands as a solemn homage to The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. The statue's genesis stems from the inspiration drawn from Major William Howe Green, a valiant veteran of the Newfoundland Regiment during the harrowing period of World War I. Green's unwavering dedication to the regiment's memory ignited the inception of this enduring emblem. The replica of the original monument is located in Beaumont Hamel, France. The Newfoundland Regiment's choice of the caribou as its official emblem during the war resonates profoundly with this statue. The caribou, symbolizing strength and resilience, becomes a conduit through which the regiment's ethos is channeled—a manifestation of the unwavering loyalty and courage of those who served. This artistic endeavor seeks to evoke a spectrum of emotions and reflections within its viewers. The intertwining narratives of history, sacrifice, and camaraderie are designed to prompt contemplation on the magnitude of the regiment's dedication. It prompts observers to delve into the stories of valor that echo within its form, igniting empathy and appreciation for those who made the ultimate sacrifice. As the eyes of observers rest upon the Caribou statue, it is hoped that they will be moved to reflect upon the sacrifices of those who served in The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. It is a visual tribute that encapsulates history, resilience, and unwavering loyalty, a beacon of remembrance that invites contemplation on the enduring legacy of those who have come before us.
