Three Expressionistic Graces Artwork

The artists' group "Die Brücke", to which Ernst Ludwig Kirchner belonged, had an enormous influence on the visual arts. The group is considered an important representative of Expressionism and a pioneer of classical modernism. The group was founded in Dresden in 1905 and set itself the goal of freeing art from old conventions and creating a new, expressive style. The members of the "Brücke" strove for a uniform group style, which was characterized by a contrasting and intense use of colors, deliberate coarsening of forms and a woodcut-like character. They broke with the Impressionist and Realist tradition and introduced new formal solutions characterized by angular shapes and bright, unmixed shades. The "Brücke" artists also influenced the examination of African and Oceanic naïve art. Their works and the style they propagated had a lasting effect on the development of modern art in Germany and beyond.
