About The Artwork

The fascination of photography is that it captures moments in continuous time - creating a tension between the image and the flow of life. In photographing streams over the last five years, this tension has been in the foreground of my practice. There are technical aspects like using short or long exposures to express the blur of flowing water. But I am most interested in how a printed photograph connects the time of the viewer and the moment and place of the photo, an experience of space and time that multiplies and refracts. There are so many things happening in a simple cascade, but one thing this photo shows that I especially like is the abundance of insect life thriving in cold running streams. Covering the rock in this photo are hundreds of juvenile insects filtering particles from the water. Perhaps ironically, with millions of tiny insects in a short stretch of stream, they are the reason mountain streams stay so pure and clear. Prints are limited to an edition of 30. I print them myself on Moab Exhibition Luster 300gsm acid free paper on an Epson P800 pigment printer for the highest archival durability in digital imaging. Your print will be signed and numbered on the back, and ships in a tube. Images are printed without borders. For additional sizes and pricing, please contact me.

I am a visual artist using writing, drawing and photography, and creating installations for unusual sites and clients. I grew up a Los Angeles suburb in a landscape re-imagined and transformed by human engineering. In responding to that influence, I work to understand how particular spaces and metaphors illuminate universal themes such as sunlight and shade, written language or water systems. I have been working as an artist for four decades and am dedicated to the evolution of my work and the advancement of the field. For more about what I do please visit my website www.toddgilens.com
