After seeing that the indigenous indians of the Brazilian forest were gathering in San Paulo to protest against a motorway being built where the precious Amazonian forest was to be destroyed, bravely despite threats to their safety... I felt helpless. I started the drawing with the face of one of their leaders: Sonia Guajajara. I then ammended it so that it became more universal, like Mother Earth herself. On the right is the enslavement of women and girls and the rampant capitalist greed that threatens our world; on the left is the mother, child and crone, under a tree by a lake where an angel sleeps, signifying the innocence and beauty of the feminine, the source of life. The style is highly figurative yet borrows from Surrealism, with deliberate references to Frida Kahlo.
