60 x 60 cm square canvas arranged in a diamond shape, covering an area of 85 x 85 cm. Ariane had several lives. Chassis bought second-hand, it was covered for the first time in 2020 with a paint that never satisfied me. The canvas was repainted in 2021 without ever having been exhibited. The new work was then judged by a particularly failed "friend". For two years, it sat in a corner of the studio before I decided to repaint it once again. With her heavy past and her scars, Ariane will never be a smooth and clean canvas. Just like her previous lives, Ariadne is made of three different papers: a reconstruction of the palace of Knossos (Crete), a map of Crete and a map of the sky. Indeed, Ariadne is the daughter of King Minos, who gave his name to the Minoan civilization settled mainly in Crete. Seduced by the hero Theseus, she helps him with a thread to find his way through the labyrinth to kill the Minotaur in its center. Bad luck, after that, Theseus abandons her but she ends up marrying Dionysos. For this painting, I was very nostalgic for ancient Greece and my "thesis in archeology" period. I chose a model close to the Koré, these archaic statues representing young women in hieratic attitudes and dressed in peplos.

The difficult issue of identity, duality and inner conflict is at the heart of Annabelle's thinking. Whether it is the injunction made to women (on their physique, their activities or their social status) or the personal evolution in our society (where the norm is still the only model and where the difference is stifled), the question is then the same: how do we make our deep convictions coincide with the world around us? How to assert our identity without feeling judged? Can we remain ourselves, flourish, knowing that we are constantly influenced by society, the gaze of others, social networks, money or even success? Annabelle rips, cuts and glues book pages and playing cards on the canvas, which she then covers with acrylic paint. The organic skin of the women that she portrays thus gives way to images and colors that make it possible to transcribe what they feel and who they are.
