Set in Cape Coast in the central region of Ghana, this piece brings to life the happy, vibrant and unapologetic life of the Fante people. It conveys a sense of lightness, merry and the communal essence of being, celebrating togetherness and culture. When creating this piece, I thought about the countless wedding parties I had witnessed as a child, how profoundly they influenced my perception of the world, to be free and stay in the moment, of the impressive way people lived back then, enjoying every moment and sharing. In this painting, four women depicted in colourful silhouettes, with elaborate hairstyles are seen to be laying together in a rather suspenseful but natural setting. With a lush green, pink and purple background I wanted to communicate the mixed feeling women have when they are preparing for such an event. They are unsure what to wear, how to style their hair or even what makeup to put on. Obviously with such intensity of colour I wanted my subjects to be unapologetic and bold, not caring what the world thought about what they wear. In a culture where we can be lost in trying to please everyone, this painting communicates a sense of individualism, a probe into being, a leaning into freedom of expression if you will and just a candid desire to be who I am without explaining why.

I am a Contemporary Ghanaian Textile artist based in Accra. I am a self driven creative who considers himself fluid in his practice, constantly working to evolve and push the boundaries of what I do. I work primarily with Upcycled Textile waste incorporating painting and sculpture as form of transitional framework for my material to verbalise what is trapped inside of it. I feel sometimes the vision of the soul dictates the structure, defence or vulnerability of the work and in other times I have to steward the vision. I am just a steward of the visions of my soul. I can guide it with my hands but I cannot control what it wants to say. Freedom is essential to my soul as breath is to my life and I try as much as possible to articulate that in the context of my practice and beyond. I could never tell if any of my projects were and are successful because I feel the moment you label something, it only exists in the boundary you've given it. You do not have to understand what I create or even try to give meaning to it because if it's visual language strikes you, then I must be saying something that your soul recognises but your mind hasn't quite grasped yet. I feel sometimes the vision of the soul dictates the structure, defence or vulnerability of the work and in other times I have to steward the vision. I am just a steward of the visions of my soul. The day I become truly free is the day my hands will be in control. It's the day I can truly describe what I create.
