The works of five female artists were selected to be the base of the reinterpretation, paralleling the six immigrants portrayed. The artists were selected because of the similarities they shared with the women represented. The pairing choice for each painting demanded a subtle observation to find connections between the two women. The first body of work is just the beginning of an extensive set that I will develop in the future.  I created mixed-media works using oil painting and collage with magazine paper and fabric. The majority of the paper scraps were art-related: catalogs, books, and magazines. For the textile materials, I used clothes that I bought at second-hand shops or my old clothes. The addition of personal items gave another layer of meaning to the painting as if evoking the previous owners’ spirituality, creating layers of information, knowledge, and experiences.
