Here in Sicily, it doesn't rain all that often, but when it does it's pretty dramatic. A couple of years ago, I went on a walk just after a huge downpour. The sun was already starting to scatter the clouds and mist and the light was satisfyingly odd. I'm very fond of such surprises, they strike me to my soul and I feel that I must do something about it. At the time I thought it was something I'd like to try to capture in a painting. So this is "After Rain", a very wintery scene for Sicily, and atypical in the sense that you don't often see representations of our rainy season, unless it's news about flooding in Catania, complete with startling videos of raging water coursing through charming ancient streets. Maybe it's the Brit in me that's drawn instinctively towards representing the rainy time, but there's something very clear and fresh and different and refreshing when this ancient, semi-arid landscape gets drenched. All sorts of smells rise up out of the earth, almost like incense, and the dustless air, still heavy with cloud stands stark and clear all around you. Maybe that's the comfort of the familiar in a strange land, but I enjoy seeing it, walking in it, and rooting for the sun as it starts to break out again.

British animator/artist/musician who followed the sunlight and wound up in Sicily, Italy. I have been single-handedly creating an animated series called VOID since 2021 and releasing (music) albums as The Lowest of Low since 2018. Trained in painting, and in pottery and sculpture (under Sandra McKenzie-Schmitt in the US), I took up painting again after many years of trying to live a “normal” life (rather hopeless, I’m afraid…) as an organic farmer in the North York Moors. I’m happy for the experience though now I do enjoy the motor control that comes from feeling your fingers while you work. I most enjoy painting landscapes and animals. And probably food. I’m not sure if that’s because of the farming, or the farming was because of this original attraction to living in the land, the sky, caring for animals and planting. Who can say? “Show me the face you had before you were born!” Meditation and Zen Buddhism are important to me. I have lived and worked in the US, UK, India, Japan and Italy. Perhaps Egypt next. Every place opens different aspects, informs something, influences the lens through which I experience the world, and that’s the place out of which my artwork comes. It is my sincere hope that it resonates with something in you and brings you joy. My "painting name" is Anna Lipari, in part as an homage to my great-grandmother, whose name was Anna, and in part because it pleases me to sign my paintings "AL". Lipari is a volcanic island off the coast of Sicily. I'm rather fond of volcanoes and islands, being perhaps a little bit of both those things (metaphorically) myself.
