Between Worlds Painting

I created this painting during the height of the Coronavirus lockdown in California. During this time all we could really do was go out hiking, even the beach closed down at one point. At the same time I was reading the book "The Teachings of Don Juan" by Carlos Castaneda. This classic novel tells the story of a graduate student apprenticing with a master of plant medicine from Mexico. On my hikes I was fascinated by the cactus plants that I saw, especially how the old parts decayed and the new growth would grow out of that decay. This painting is completely from my imagination and went through many phases. I think I arrived at an image that is an amalgamation of this shaman Don Juan from Castaneda's book and from my own solitary venture into nature during this time of shifted reality.
