In Goulet’s 2021 body of work, the idea of what it means to “repair” something is informing his work. Employing techniques acquired from working at an art conservation shop, these layered and textural works reference excavated relics of the past, like the subtle beauty of distressed textures on urban walls. By masking the surface of the painting and both intentionally and randomly revealing certain areas, interesting synchronicities between shapes and colors appear that create an indirect narrative within the picture plane. With abstraction commonly referencing a spiritual component of what it means to be human, Goulet’s paintings mention the significance of handmade physical art objects in a digitally saturated world. The hard edge “digital” boundaries between visceral, textural, pattern-making, create a kind-of metaphorical unified dichotomy between science and mysticism.
