The tomato is closely intertwined with folk culture around the world. In Japan, a bank is named after the tomato. In America, in slang, an attractive woman is called a tomato. But, perhaps, the most universal tradition is the tomato throwing - it went back to the middle of the nineteenth century. This custom originated in suburban regions, and from there it moved to theaters, where in this way they expressed displeasure with the performance. More recently, politicians have become a favorite victim of tomato throwers. In the late 1940s, a tomato throwing was held as an organized event in Banjole, a town 25 miles west of the Mediterranean town of Valencia in Spain. The Tomatina Festival, which takes place on the last Wednesday of August, has been officially sponsored by the city since 1979. More than thirty thousand people throw tomatoes at each other and at city buildings for a whole hour. Are found in some countries of the world, among which the USA can be mentioned. The Reynoldsburg Tomato Festival in Ohio attracts about thirty-five thousand people who participate in tomato-themed contests and enjoy tomato dishes. The California Tomato Festival gives everyone a taste of the harvest of more than a hundred varietal tomatoes. The tomato is also in some way a symbol of life, fire, activity.
