About The Artwork

I personally crafted all of the black paper used in the paintings. To enhance the depth of the pictorial space, I stained thin hanji paper in black. I also used high-quality traditional materials such as pure gold power, special adhesive and alum. For example, I employed white clay and oyster shell white to achieve nuanced white tones. To bring the paintings to life, the subject matter, techniques and materials should be organically interconnected. Each piece embodies the energy of ‘blessing (福)’. The vitality of the artwork is somewhat determined during the sketching stage. With each stroke, I could feel the artworks’ vitality. I hope that the joy and vigorous energy I felt while drawing can be conveyed both inside and outside the gallery walls.

Artist Kim Hyunjung’s paintings skillfully carry on the traditions of royal court painters and sadaebu, scholar-officials while expressing her unique aesthetics and those of our time. The theme of ‘Offering Painting of Clouds and Mist’ intends to help viewers regenerate through paintings imbued with positive energy and to make the space where they are displayed auspicious. Hyunjung’s paintings do more than just depicting Mother Nature; they capture positive energy, delights our eyes and hearts, and bring blessing to the world. This resonates with the value that ancient royal families pursued in paintings, obtaining ‘blessing(福)’ through the positive energy they convey.
