About The Artwork

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, ink, UV protection, oil, powdered gold pigments, resin, varnish on overpainted pigment prints on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. Two parts. Shipped in two boxes. What we have here is a cacophony of particularly exuberant visual language: a semiotic wall of color, a freefall through the periodic table of image and aesthetic, meaning and non-meaning, figuration (typography) and abstraction. We discover a compelling synthesis of found commercial graphics and imagery into contemplations of dynamics of color, form and abstraction. The willful inconsistencies of iconography and style, the sheer difficulty of figuring out what the work is about—nonsense, or no sense, in terms of struggle to fight meaning or to find it—are the artist’s primary concern.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions, art fairs, and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), Sotheby's (Vienna), Fritz Hansen (Denmark) and Allianz Art Collection. His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. Peter Vahlefeld was featured on the German television channel ZDF. He currently lives and works in Berlin and Munich.
