About The Artwork

Acrylic, acrylic based medium, UV protection, oil, powdered pigments, resin, varnish, fabrics on pigment prints on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. Peter Vahlefeld starts to use the magazine page (readymade) as a medium. The furious, jagged marks appear as if he was attacking the printed matter (a double page of an Elaine Sturtevant ad) with a physicality that was reducing representational forms to a purely emotional response. Characterized by its concentrated materiality, the artwork is constructed from intersecting lines, fields, and swaths of color applied with brooms, brushes and hands. By varying the force with which he dragged his tools across the canvas, Vahlefeld added and, crucially, removed areas of paint to generate a highly unpredictable surface. By expropriating and deconstructing those glossy pages something truer, hand-made and authentic should be expressed. The resulting juxtapositions (paint vs. print) seek to remind one of the visual and psychological manipulations abound in advertising while also creating a new dialogue in response.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions, art fairs, and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), Sotheby's (Vienna), Fritz Hansen (Denmark) and Allianz Art Collection. His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. Peter Vahlefeld was featured on the German television channel ZDF. He currently lives and works in Berlin and Munich.
