About The Artwork

I carry memories of feelings associated with place. In this piece, the landforms are reminiscent of a certain area of northern BC, but the painting evolved out of imagination, the real subject matter being emotions. The language I used was meant to evoke feelings of peace, joy, beauty, light and austerity. The color green symbolizes those qualities. The painting can be a window, into which the viewer can look into layers of distance or time. What is in the distance is only vaguely suggested. The surface is splined canvas. D ring hangers with picture wire are installed. A label is on the back with my name, title and year.

I grew up in West Vancouver, lived for years in Ontario and now call Fort St John, BC, home. Currently, my focus is on exploring ideas related to our intrinsic connection with nature and the landscape. These ideas have evolved over the time I have spent living in Northern BC and exploring the Pacific Coast. The human psyche is a powerful, creative force which is interconnected with the physical world. Like the sky, water and landforms, thoughts, hopes, dreams and fears are in constant motion forming, breaking down and transforming in an ongoing act of creation towards ever-changing realities. This quality of impermanence make for an intangible idea of reality but there is strength and beauty in the ability to change and evolve. We tend to think of ourselves as existing outside of nature, being separate from it. I would like the viewer to think of their environment from a different perspective, finding power and balance in the mutable, transformational qualities which are as much a part of us as they are in the natural world we observe.
