This work is part of Ketty Zhang's solo exhibition "On the ninety-ninth night" in Vancouver in 2022. Using text from Roland Barthes' A Lover's Discourse as a starting point, the mixed media series draws from personal memory to explore the themes of love, lost, nostalgia and new beginnings. This piece quotes Barthes: "In amorous mourning, the object is neither dead nor remote. It is I who decide that its image must die. As long as this strange mourning lasts, I will therefore have to undergo two contrary miseries: to suffer from the fact that the other is present and to suffer from the fact that the other is dead."

Informed by her experience as a 1.5-generation immigrant, her practice navigates her relationship with placelessness and (non)belonging in a hyper-globalized world.
