'From Seed to Bloom' is a self-portrait, inspired by how I feel as an artist. Prior to working on this painting, I frequently passed a developing field of sunflowers throughout spring and summer. When deciding to visit the sunflower field, I felt the bodily presence of each big flower, with some already deteriorating. The sunflower within the work shows the stage of blossoming, where the artist intends to get to. The artist shows the stage of being a seed, at the beginning of its life.

Ella Jackson (b.2001) lives in both London and Dorset. Graduating in 2023 from Central Saint Martins in BA (Hons) Fine art, her practice fundamentally explores human relationships and the emotion of love. Personal experiences of these themes is how her work currently exists, with the subjects within each piece being a close relative or friend. Whilst the audience may not directly know the subjects, she intends for the works to emit a sense of the familiar, connecting them to their own relationships, through colour, composition and place. The process in making the paintings begins with colour, with the manipulation of additional colours placed on a coloured surface being of interest. Her palette is predominately been warm tones of pink, orange and greens with the intention of mimicking the warmth and comfortable nature of love. Each work is a gradual build-up of delicate, intimately applied brush strokes. Whilst not adhering to the science and colour theory behind ‘Pointillism’, the style of each stroke is arguably of a similar nature. They show the labour of the artist’s hand. Whilst being laborious and time consuming, there is coherence between the paintings’ process and theme. The cumulative brush strokes imitate the gradual development of building a relationship, taking both time and effort.
