Garlic Painting

I stumbled upon a photograph of a lone garlic bulb in the beginning of 2023, when I had just been laid off and was struggling to find solace in independent living. I became smitten with the image—the garlic’s solitude so familiar and resounding—and resolved to paint it. Stripped for art resources at the time, my painting became born out of only 4 acrylic colours: red, blue, yellow, and white. Despite the scarcity, I didn’t realize how nourishing it could feel to paint something as unassuming as garlic, to be suspended in its calm beauty with nothing but tea and a crackling candle wick to keep me company. Painting this piece helped me gently overcome a fleeting lapse of darkness in my life. I hope to pass on its light. [Reference photograph by Aline Dias, whose work can be found on 500px]
