About The Artwork

This is a large art piece of a Buddha head, produced on handmade bark/amate (prehispanic Mesoamerica) paper. The artwork is inspired by an early sculpture of a head of a Buddha, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, India (Uttar Pradesh, Mathura, late 5th- early 6th century). Although, the iconography has also been given the simple shapes and the range of poignant, bright colors which can be seen in social media symbols and emoji communication of the Buddha. Stella's choice of using handmade paper from San Rafael Ixtapalucan, Puebla, (Mexico) for this specific piece, allows for an expressive and authentic form of a Buddha. Many Mexican great masters have produced original artwork and prints on amate paper, such as for instance; Rufino Tamayo and Carlos Merida. This original artwork by Stella E. would would brighten and bring calm to any serene interiors you may require.
