The implication is obvious, the subject has been raped and we view her after the act, now Clothed again, in distress. Tones of the woman's clothes are in her arms, suggesting an intimate relationship between herself and her clothing. Stylistically however the brush work used to depict the woman/girl's clothes differs from the swirls and whorls found else where. The contrast maybe to highlight the flawed reasoning that a females clothing dictates her sexual fate. I have also considered the implicit violence in the act, and hope to have created the shadow of a hand mark on her left arm, with the inconsistent skin tone denoting bruising. This painting was inspired by the #MeToo movement, and so many of the brave, mostly women, but also some men, who publicised their traumatic experience of sexual assault and rape. Rape culture is evident worldwide, and the most powerful politician in the world, Trump, has openly mocked victims of rape and painted men as being the real victims of the #MeToo movement. This demonstrates the dystopian nature of the Trump administration, as the men falsely accused of sexual assaulted is minuscule in comparison with the amount of women and girls who have actually been sexually assaulted. The conservative estimate is one in three. The background, a muted green, is often found in court room in Britain. With the subject in obvious distress, her arms sheltering her entire face, perhaps we can consider this woman is currently being interrogated by defense council in a court room setting, and she is sheltering or hiding from uncomfortable or unpalatable question in a public setting. I hope this painting goes some way to express to distress felt by those who have been raped, by a stranger but more likely a relative, friend or acquaintance, and dispel the flawed reasoning that a woman or girl is in any way responsible for being assaulted as often used in court cases dealing with accusations of rape and sexual assault, that a woman clothing somehow invites being violated.
