About The Artwork
Pfalzgrafenstein Castle (German: Burg Pfalzgrafenstein) is a toll castle on the Falkenau island, otherwise known as Pfalz Island in the Rhine river near Kaub, Germany. Known as "the Pfalz," this former stronghold is famous for its picturesque and unique setting. In 2017 I traveled along the Rhine to commemorate the bi-centenary of JMW Turner's first visit to the area. I made a number of sketches which I later turned into oil paintings when I returned to England.

Ted Toms was born in Chelmsford, England in 1948 and studied at Colchester School of Art, where he was taught life drawing and painting by some leading contemporary artists, including Peter Coker, John Nash and Peter Blake. He finds inspiration for his landscape and seascape painting from the Stour Estuary, close to his studio in Bradfield in Essex and from frequent visits to the Rhine Valley in Germany. His work is in private collections in the UK, Europe and the United States.
