Levit Painting

"Levit" is a large abstract artwork in my Reform series. The reform series aligns with a structural architectural design. Levit has been constructed, then deconstructed in parts, and restructured to create a level of interest as the layers build up and interact. The painting is colour field, and features vast sections of minimalist colours. The design and style used intended to exude calmness. Though it is colourful, the use of muted tones, and generally straight lines ensures that the painting is a statement piece, but is not too dramatic. I have tried to capture elements of contradiction. For example, the painting immediately looks like a simple arrangement of blocks of colour. Yet, upon closer examination there is a lot more complexity in the underpainting and faint lines. Also the painting appears “neat” yet I work the paint in such a way that it is far more rustic, and include deliberate smudges and colour bleeds. Each line, each colour and each shape needs to fit in with every other section in the painting. I deliberate every move, and find that making changes adds an interesting level to the under painting layers. The painting has been continued over onto the sides which adds another dimension to the artwork, and also means it does not need to be framed. I have signed the painting and finished it off with several layers of matte varnish coat to highlight the colours, and to protect the painting. Levit has been painted on a beautifully constructed custom made 120cm x 90xm Victorian Ash stretchers on 12 oz cotton canvas. The above photos present Levit in a home setting, though it would work equally well in an office environment. A handy way of determining just how this sized painting will work in your space is to use blue tack dots or removable low tack masking tape on your wall to plot out the border of the painting. This method gives you a realistic impression of how the painting will fit on your wall.
