Lexington Candy Shop Painting

This painting is hand stretched cotton duck canvas on a custom made furniture grade frame. Canvas has been primed and wrapped to the rear of the frame for better presentation without a frame. Hanging hardware is mounted on the back. A clear coat has been applied to protect from dust and potential damage to the paint surface. This piece is of a lunch with my mother while she had visited me in New York. She is a retired art teacher, so her visits consist of trips to museums and galleries primarily. This particular day, we stopped for a light lunch and had conversations more like old friends than mother and son. The diner, with its old pink countertops and green upholstery, immediately registered as a scene that I would want to portray. Beginning with light washes of color, I create a basic composition and little by little build up and refine the image. All the while I'm allowing parts of the underpainting to show through as the piece becomes more concrete.
