About The Artwork
This is a portrait of Comedian and Feminist activist Kate Smurthwaite's alter-ego Milo Standards. Milo is a character partly based on Kate's experience of being trolled and attacked online. He is a misogynistic, ignorant 'alpha male' who derides feminism and objectifies women. Kate performs the character in drag and I wanted to highlight the important gender politics of the act in this portrait. The male body parts and phallic imagery seen through the binoculars represents male objectification, as opposed to female, and Milo urinates his own name though a fake 'penis' which points to his (lack of) real masculinity.

I am a South-London based painter specialising in portraiture. Although I did an Art Foundation course some years ago I have no formal art education aside from school and taught myself to paint. I am fascinated by people and try to capture the unique characters of my subjects by experimenting with perspective, colour and mixed media. My work often incorporates elements of humour, the macabre and fantasy to tell a story about the subjects and bring them to life, as well as transport the viewer into an alternate, escapist reality. Artistic influences include Frida Kahlo, the Chapman Brothers, Hieronymous Bosch, the work of Kubrick, Alberto Vargas, Dali.
