About The Artwork

I have travelled Ethiopia in 2014. I had the chance to visit ancient churches and monastry in the Geralta area in Tigray region, in the north of the country. In those churches monks keep reading and preserved sacred books. They have showed me those books fully illustrated with biblical scenes and mitological figures. Has been like a fever for me. I have painted the memories of all those mystical places after that encounter. Each miniature is a remembrance of that incredible travel.

My artistic work consists of giving shape to symbols and images in which I find a facet of the sacred, investigating the deep and unconscious aspects to which they are tied. The aim of this practice is to celebrate the universality of such symbols without ignoring their often religious and social significance. The lamb is the symbol I've developed most since the start of my research. It is a figure that has been a constant presence in my life and with which I have a very strong, unconscious bond. An image I recognize as bearing truth and universal wellbeing. I have placed this symbol in many works using various media—primarily lead, gold, chalk, rubber stamp, and video. These works express such concepts as human fragility and solitude or the need to re-establish contact with nature in a divided and impoverished world. I am also attracted to the concept of transience and what is left of us after death. The silhouette and palm of the hand are both forms that I believe best represent this idea. I have created works by inking my own hand, as well as those of others, with the clear design of registering their presence on a support structure. The end result is a body of work with the power to bind soul to matter and to reconnect one to life once this one has ended. I am interested in the formal aspects of my work, but above all the external act, the gesture, and repetition are the origin of creation, the starting point of a work which becomes the vehicle for a symbol and a concrete contact point between the interior and exterior. For me, an artwork is the end result of an action. The synthesis of its process.
