This painting is perhaps a counterpart to a painting I made: Cancerous society with many cars on display. Here you see a highway with very few cars. So few cars that even deer graze and large shrubs with flowers grow. In olden times you had a car free Sunday in the Netherlands. Highways were almost empty. Wouldn't that be a nice time? Highways with fewer cars. A longing that leans towards nostalgia, hence the title. For this reason, the colors are in the orange spectrum. A color associated with old photos that perish that allows us to muse on better times. In addition, I tried to show the signs of use of the highways by applying several layers of paint. Just as the artist Peter Doig likes to paint; in several layers and then layer over it again.

The passion for painting has been in my family for 2 generations. Some say that painting is my talent. But I don't believe in that. A good painting is building knowledge and a lot of work. I discovered painting when I was 18 - just finished high school and looking for a future. The possibility of taking an art course never occurred to me. Because I had better go to work. At the supermarket, the confectioner, the catering industry and several years in a hotel in the Swiss Alps. In retrospect I am happy with the diversity of the experiences. Now I'm even happier that I went to study art afterwards because art has always been a force of motivation in my life. By taking courses in sculpture, photography, modeling clay, art history after work and by learning to paint when I had time to spare in the evening or weekend. I followed my training as an autonomous artist at the Hogeschool der Kunsten in Utrecht (HKU). I also trained as a visual teacher. Since 2016 I have been working as an art teacher a few days a week. And of course the rest of the time is spent on painting, drawing and sculpting. Im doing that in a traditional sense but also digital. Both influence each other. My great sources of inspiration in terms of artists are old masters from long ago but also well-known artists of today such as: Ian Francis, Jonas Wood, Peter Doig, Jeff Wall, Andreas Gursky, Tjebbe Beekmans and Beeple.
