Students in my drawing classes will often leave behind their sketchbooks or near empty pads of paper. They must assume they no longer need to draw when the course concludes. So I collect them. I'm attracted to the earthy color of the chipboard, the solidity of its form, and the fact that its function is to support something deemed more valuable. My process for creating the work is this: a graphite grid is drawn on the chipboard, and the rectangles in between the graphite lines are filled with acrylic paint. In this piece, the painted areas form a circle, which represents optimism in my visual vocabulary. I intentionally leave the binding edge on the chipboard. I find beauty in its repetition, rhythm, and precision.

United States
Born in Nebraska, USA Lives and works in Michigan, USA Maureen Nollette's paintings and drawings employ the formal elements of art to explore the delicate balance and connections formed through relationships in a broad sense. She investigates this topic using ordinary objects such as flattened, recycled boxes as patterns, layering arrangements with a network of lines and shapes. Nollette creates asymmetrically balanced compositions through the placement, scale, and color of elements, resulting in work that resembles quilts, circuitry, or maps. Nollette's work has been in exhibitions across the United States and China. Additionally, her work is part of prominent private and public collections, including the Detroit Institute of the Arts (Detroit, MI); Yves St. Laurent (New York, NY); MGM Mirage Hotel (Las Vegas, NV); J. Jill Group (Tilton, NH); and Gerald R. Ford International Airport (Grand Rapids, MI). She was awarded a 2025 Carraig-na-gCat Artists Residency in West Cork, Ireland; a 2022 Thread Artists Residency in Sinthian, Africa; and a 2016 Marble House Project Artists Residency in Dorset, VT. Nollette holds a BA in Journalism from the University of Nebraska, a BFA from the Kansas City Arts Institute, and an MFA in Studio Arts from Queens College.
