This work is an abstract metaphor for a sunset-inspired by the Pamlico Sound in North Carolina where the artist would spend ample amounts of time in his childhood. It's indexical of light and features transparent colors, warm neutrals, chromatic grays, and cool colors. It is meant to inspire contemplation of formal elements of color, form, and light and themes such as the passing of time and memory. Philosophically, he wants the viewer to engage with the contradictory nature of confined spaces and the juxtaposition between restriction and freedom. The grid is a restrictive tool that can become a creative tool. Much like a screen or window, where viewers gaze into and are transfixed or practice observation. The surface of the painting is smooth, and the painting size is 16 in by 20 in. It does not come with hanging hardware.

Ian's work explores themes of time, color, observation, waiting, and confinement. He begins each of his small to mid-size and occasionally large works with a set of parameters and rules and then improvises them going forward to reach planned or unexpected conclusions.
