About The Artwork

I created this piece as my first true process led representational piece and my first large(r) scale. I built off of a photo reference that I had found online of an elderly lady as a way to study the folds of an aged face. This quickly diverged from my initial goal and became a way for me to play with the image and the (abstracted) idea of mark making to create a visual language. In the unexpected anachronisms of the hyper-politicised symbols found on the subject, I look to inspire in the viewer a questioning of the relations and intersections of the dialectically balanced narratives our own ethiical-political-socio-economic bodies - individually and collectively, in a Deleuzoguattarian way. Like in all my works, the idea is for the viewer to super-impose and reinscribe their own meanings to those already deeply codified symbols that come forth in the flow of the contemporary unconscious of post-post-modernity.

Samuel Honey is a London-based figurative artist from West Yorkshire, working in an integrative, mixed media style that draws heavily upon the absurd and the uncanny to create his own brand of irreverent surrealism. As an artist with strong literary and philosophical influences, Samuel creates work that explores questions posed in the fields of semiotics, pragmatics and metaphysics. His use of space, partiality and confused objects, seeks to express the layered, often paradoxical and competing dialogues in narrative creation. Samuel’s work aims to evoke in equal portions the theatricality of Beckett and discourses of artistic giants such as Cezanne, Bacon, Lucian Freud, and Jenny Saville.
