Rise Above Painting

I'm a Canadian-born Bay Area artist who creates curvaceously geometric, symmetrically patterned abstract paintings and sculptures. I received formal training at Lakehead University in traditional fine art techniques and am self-taught in digital graphic arts. Recently, I've settled into a studio practice after years of contributing art to multimedia events and festivals. My practice exists in a transitional zone where low-tech analog and high-tech digital media intersect. I mix paint, wood, and paper with Adobe Illustrator, employing machines as familiar as an office laser printer or as imposing as an industrial CNC router. Rhythm, repetitive patterning, and beguiling perceptual distortions appear in both 2D and 3D pieces, creating works that are hypnotic and meditative. I'm equally as inspired by patterns in microscopic organisms as I am by ancient tile-work in cathedrals and mosques. The imagery gives an understated nod to 60s op art and post-painterly abstraction, while making room for narrative elements. That narrative is about energy, movement, and change; Interconnectedness, entropy, and potentiality. I continue to explore the spiritual impact of symmetry and mathematical precision combined with subtle symbolism, where deeper meanings emerge only through careful observation and introspection.
