About The Artwork

Gestures are brushstrokes or bodily expressions. Marcus Appelberg has long been interested in fashion and draping, where his body has often become spectacle for fashion's different modes of expression, and bodies being depicted draped in cloth in paintings. Mainly though, his paintings are characterized by a lack of figures in favor of empty rooms and scenes. The last years he has worked with textile, linen is draped around stretchers creating pictorial space. They deal with the body but could be read as expanded paintings, where the base material of painting (linen and stretcher) are used to explore the boundaries of painting. In a series of new paintings inspiration is drawn from renaissance paintings depicting biblical scenes. Through gestures and expressions hidden under cloth the boundary between body and clothing is explored, and the works become an extension of the textile works that explore the relationship to their body.
