Painting, Encaustic on Wood

I started this encaustic piece with this beautiful bent and rusty found metal object. From it, as I built the layers of molten beeswax around it, I felt a flow of colour creeping out from its open end. I painted my wax colours and subsequent shellac burns layer upon layer, with the idea in mind of this beautiful object releasing all the life it had once held. When I look at this little piece, the calming and clean blues and greens with the amber accents and white shellac burns make me relaxed. I can almost feel the release of constraints with the flow. Encaustics is my favourite medium. I am in another world as I work with this ancient painting technique practiced by Greek artists as far back as the 5th century B.C. I love the stacked effects I can achieve. I love the luminosity and lusciousness of the wax. Every layer of wax is fused to the previous with a blowtorch. The open web-like tendrils of colour are paint strokes of pigmented or natural shellac that I have burned with my blowtorch, using the flame as a paintbrush as I coax the shellac to open up and reveal what lays beneath. The piece is painted on cradled wood board, the sides are painted black with the wax just cresting over the edge. It has hanging hardware on the back, but would be lovely mounted in a floating frame. The work is signed on the back.

The arts and creative world have long been a part of my life, beginning with painting and illustrating from a very young age to a 22-year career in fashion design and pattern-making in the high-end of Toronto's fashion industry. Living in Hamilton since 2004, I have established myself as a fine art photographer specializing in aerial and aviation photography. With a fondness for nature and landscape, I am often inspired by that which I have captured in my photography and love to interpret that through acrylics as well as encaustic painting. I have exhibited in many group exhibitions and fundraising events, including at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, McMaster Innovation Park, Fieldcote Museum, Dundas Valley School of Art and the Louvre in Paris. My work hangs in private collections and in professional offices throughout Canada, the United States, France, Australia, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
