Strate Shooder Painting

This painting was largely inspired by 19th century/early 20th century, Victorian advertisements for ladies/women's products. My mom used to collect these old adverts and poster reproductions; and then she would distress them by rubbing dirt on them, burning them, and then shellac them to wooden panels. Using, and being inspired by some of my mom's methods, I take the figuration even further, and make these portraits, heads, figures—whatever you want to call them, into mysterious, hybrids. They definitive yet vulnerable, and in this case, the figure is strangely cloaked like a peculiar figure from a Hieronymus Bosch painting, alluding to parables. The sexual references are present, obviously— but this person, whose gender is somewhat disguised by the cloaking, appears determined and valiant.
