About The Artwork

Caravaggio's dramatic painting The Taking of Christ depicts the events of the night of Holy Thursday. Judas has identified Christ with a kiss, and the temple guards move to make their arrest as another disciple flees the scene. The image would have encouraged viewers to follow Christ's example, to place forgiveness before revenge, and to engage in spiritual rather than physical combat. Caravaggio presents the scene as if it were a frozen moment, to which the over-crowded composition and violent gestures contribute dramatic impact. On Boy Bitten by a Lizard we see Caravaggio himself dressed as an effeminate Bacchus who has reached down to pluck a cherry only to have his middle finger bitten by a lizard. It is a sarky Italian lament on the brevity of sensual pleasures. The lizard, representing old age also symbolizes the fact that one doesn't stay young forever and that their will be an end eventually.

I create colorful and highly detailed works of art to express my love for the modern human as well as my concerns about contemporary society. My hyperreal paintings are based on photographs I took during long walks through my hometown and major cities. Paintings show people on the streets, in stores, public transport and museums or zoom in on popular products. To me these glimpses of everyday live are important as they say a whole lot about todays society. They show the way people act, communicate or are influenced by modern developments in various ways. I observe it, enlarge it and paint it. That way I freeze time and our fast and busy lives are forever captured in a moment. Finally ready to be observed quietly. About me: I'm an international recognized artist for over 20 years well known for his own style of realism painting. My art is in museums, galleries and private collections worldwide (6 continents, 30 countries). In 2018 I showed his works alongside Warhol, Haring, Banksy and others at a group show at his art dealer in France. I live and work in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.
