About The Artwork

This work was driven by an interest in viewing people from different angles, such as the back of their heads or side profiles. Painting figures gave me a sense of clarity and understanding, trying to understand their emotions and body language. I was experimenting with the idea of dreams and repetition, and how this makes the viewer feel. I painted this piece in a collage style, fitting together different perspectives of the room with the figure, to create a sense of confusion. I defaced the figures as their identity would take away from the meaning of the painting. This painting is acrylic on stretched canvas.

Charlotte Aiken is a UK based artist, currently working in Gloucestershire, creating visual impressions of the sky through the use of oil paint and mixed media. Her practice celebrates the sublimity of the sky and explores her own fascination with cloud formations and our connection to the natural world. Charlotte graduated from the London Metropolitan School of Art, Architecture and Design, in 2017. Shortly after graduating Charlotte won the Graduate Art Prize, with ARTIQ, London. Charlotte has exhibited across London and parts of the UK, she is represented by The Belgravia Gallery, ARTIQ, Cotswold Contemporary and Ad Lib Gallery. In 2023 her painting was exhibited in ‘Only Connect’, The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition. Charlotte’s work centres on the notion of infinity, as exemplified by her representations of the sky. The composition of her paintings is guided by the structure of the cloud formations she photographs. She chooses on occasion to use decorating brushes to accentuate imperfection and texture, recreating an impression of the sky rather than an accurate portrayal. Charlotte’s work reflects her distinct perspective, where she experiences a world that feels excessively exposed, pixelated, and vivid. She uses her paintings to comprehend what she observes; the layers of colour and brush strokes are physical manifestations of what the world looks like through her eyes.
