As explained in the Thirteenth Chapter of Bhagavad-gītā, there are two souls within our body - the Paramātmā and the Jīvātmā. To illustrate this further, in the Upanisads, the example is given of two birds sitting on a tree. One bird (Arjuna - the Jīvātmā) is enjoying the fruits of that tree, and the other bird (Krishna - the Paramātmā) who is the master of transcendental knowledge, is simply observing and witnessing his activities. Sadly, as the fruits of the material tree have captivated him, Arjuna has forgotten his real identity and has been performing all kinds of sinful activities simply for sense gratification. But as soon as he realizes that Krishna is always watching over him and has been his guiding force all throughout, he voluntarily surrenders unto Kṛiṣhṇa as the supreme spiritual master for further guidance. Thus becoming free from all lamentations.
