I’d been thinking a lot about transformation while working on this painting, and how growth requires unclenching our fists, giving into uncertainty, letting go of rigidity. When I started this painting several months before I completed it, it was all one color, one particular shade of blue. The only real variation in the painting was the brushstrokes. And when I had initially begun this work, it was after singing to a chair in the corner of my apartment. In the chair, I pictured a person I knew. Later when I was painting, I mixed the colors right on the canvas. The following day, after starting this piece, I looked at the blue painting and it was nearly the exact shade of the chair in which I imagined the person I was singing to. I didn’t change the monochrome painting for a while, even though I sensed that someday soon I would. I think maybe I was holding out hope in a superstitious, subconscious way that if the chair could only hold the imaginary person, maybe the painting was somehow more real, that somehow changing the painting could alter my fate. But one day several weeks later, I just drew on the blue painting and then put it back on the shelf. It was my step toward acceptance of what was already true. And then as the winter progressed, I transformed the original painting into this work. Deep down, I know very well that rigidity cannot change reality. Acceptance allows us to participate in the the process of transformation, which can bring at once a sense of whiplash from the changes and a profound sense of hope. "Transformation" was featured in the "Ultra Local" exhibition at Van Der Plas Gallery.

My art expresses the intricacies of being alive. Consciousness is full of interrelated opposites such as darkness and light, change and constancy, stillness and movement. This concept of duality is core to my paintings, drawings, and mixed media works. I use texture, color, line, and medium choices as well as abstraction, realism, and text to represent different slices of human perception. As a survivor of sexual abuse, I struggled to keep myself alive during my teenage years and early adulthood. My artwork reflects my own story, healing process, and grief as well as my observations from nature, research, and everyday life. Each artwork can stand alone to depict a certain layer or aspect of the human experience, but I also continually group and connect them like fluctuating puzzle pieces building my ever-growing picture of existence.
