My heritage is Greek and Ukrainian. I decided to do a series of paintings on each. I began this on my Ukrainian heritage after watching the HBO series "Chernobyl". Knowing the devastation that the Ukrainian people suffered under the Soviet regime with Josef Stalin in power, where he literally starved the population to death, I saw how this horror continued through the cover-up of the disaster that cost thousands of lives with the power-plant explosion. The painting depicts the marvelous art pysanka where often poor peasant women create these glorious Ukrainian Easter Eggs using bees wax as a frisket to allow the dyes to appear in certain areas, then moving on to a different color of vivid dye. I tried to capture the beauty of what can be done with this art form. So the overall concept is from birth to death, the sands of time count the hours. The red and blue ribbons depict the life-blood of our time on earth.
