Acrylic, acrylic based medium, UV protection, oil, varnish on pigment prints on canvas. The artwork comes ready to hang. Two parts. Shipped in two boxes. The basis of the artworks are overpainted advertisements, superimposed onto one another. The overpaintings serve as underpaintings that loop behind expressionist brushwork. Peter vahlefelds’ vibrant, large-scale artwork is a celebration of the expressive possibilities of color. Using bold brushstrokes and collage effects, he explores the interplay of color and texture to evoke an emotional response. To him, abstraction means that the material and process are essential to the schematics of the painting, and the sets of relationships between colors, mark-making, overpainting, text, and surface. Words and phrases snatched from the ad copy – »Picasso«, and »Gerhard Richter, abstrakte Bilder...« are echoed suggestively and loom through obfuscating veils of paint.

Peter Vahlefeld's visceral artworks combine a rigorous, process-based practice, continually rethinking the possibilities of painting. Using references to a broad array of sources, including art history, literature, and pop culture, he creates paintings that alternate between flat experience and dimensionality. Perfectly poised between European and American traditions (Art Informel, Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art), his work combines complexity into a visual richness that is neither figurative nor abstract. The paintings unfold in an intricate, unpredictable interaction of layers and excess—a constant juggling of paint, prints, fabrics, mediums and effect. They draw their actuality from the collision between the visual codes of mass media and the subjective traces of painterly expression. Peter Vahlefeld has participated in a variety of solo exhibitions, art fairs, and venues such as Neumeister Fine Art Auctioneers (Munich), Sotheby's (Vienna), Fritz Hansen (Denmark) and Allianz Art Collection. His work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout Europe, the United States and Asia. Peter Vahlefeld was featured on the German television channel ZDF. He currently lives and works in Berlin and Munich.
