At the time, this series of work was inspired by how computers would affect our perception. Was this image handmade? Or was derived via digital manipulation? The act of putting it behind glass confronted the viewer with a choice of " Is it a painting or is it a photograph"? It is a painting that is non-digital.

Perception and process have always interested me. In this series of paintings, I have consciously tried to subvert the act of mark-making. Using heavy, awkward tools such as cement trawls, oversized spades, and knives, I have attempted to distance myself from the convention. The result would leave one wondering: If, indeed, these are photographs, drawings, paintings, or computer derived images or negatives. The use of Bitumen of Judea first entered the lexicon via early photography and is a perfect medium; thus, con-joining existing tools with ancient unction. The act of making the artwork, on the other hand, was purely subconscious.
