I came across this vintage photograph and knew immediately that I had to paint it. I worked with it for months trying to get the perfect balance of colors and shapes. Highlighting and altering the colors of the girls just right while balancing the composition effectively as well. "Deconstructing" realism is something I enjoy playing with. Whether it's running unexpected colors or temperatures next to each other or pulling shapes apart, duplicating and enlarging them like I've done here with the girl on the left. I've repeated her right hand 3 times and enlarged it more each time, in the final panel you can see her face and the ball. To me, it can almost give the effect of momentum. It can help tell a story, add tension. Not that I know what's going on here with these girls but it seems pretty hot and cold like emotions might be running high. I don't always know for sure what is going on in my own work, my process is largely intuitive and instinctual. The design and technical painting may sometimes be a meticulous process, that is its nature but the narrative, not so much. I'm always happy to find things that must've been unconscious months or even years after a piece is finished. The title comes from outsider artist Henry Darger's painting series, The Glandolinian Wars. If I remember right, there was a painting in the series called, "Violet and her Sister". I saw the exhibit in the 90s at Rockefeller Center, shortly after his death. This photo brought his work to mind immediately.

The first thing people tend to remember about me as a child is that I was always drawing. Even in elementary school I always had my sketchbook. My first love was always traditional painting. I had a book about the Old Masters I copied from when I wasn't copying Star Wars characters from magazines. I received a BFA in figure drawing and graphic design with a minor in art history from Eastern Michigan University in 1987. I worked for 15 years as an art director and graphic designer. I painted and drew in my free time. In 2000, I began freelancing to find more time to paint, and by 2004, I quit advertising to paint full-time. In addition to my studio practice, I teach painting in my Sarasota FL studio.
