About The Artwork

This photograph is part of my ongoing project, "Unearth: The Sedimented Nature of Objects," which involves the assemblage of rocks in apparent equilibrium, creating sculptures. It interrogates the narratives connecting landscapes with an interest in our physical and spiritual relationship with Earth by alluding to beliefs, knowledge, rituals, and traditions. The rocks, as elements that speak of a particular region, generate new significations when stacked. During an art residency in the desert of Saudi Arabia (2024), these sedimentary rocks are often seen in exposed cliffs and outcrops, contributing to the rugged desert landscape. The yellow, brown, and orange marks are due to mineral deposits, weathering, or oxidation of certain minerals within the stone. In the Latin American Andean region, this action could allude to the Apachetas, which serve as offerings to Pachamama. In the Arabian desert, the rock piles serve as markers or signals for travelers to avoid getting lost. This sculptural form questions how we build our environment and the impact or weight of materials in our lives.

I majored in Industrial Design and learned photography at the same time. Materials and forms have always been tools to highlight concepts in their symbolic presence. Combining artificial and natural elements I seek to question our patterned beliefs and therefore, arrive at new meanings.
