I began making photograms (sans enlarger) in June 2020, due to having an unfinished darkroom at the time. 2.5+ years and nearly 5 bodies of work later, I not only teach my self-invented processes (with ice, sand, snow, glitter, flowers, and more), but have also received quite a few awards for my work. "The Many Rings of Saturn" (series) was completed via a (paid) artist-in-residence for Frame Magazine last year, and concentrates on my mixed process multiple exposures, primarily those that involve ice/ice-concoctions/ice-rubbings. This series is actually a subseries of "Fire & Ice," a larger/ongoing body of work, composed of 16x20 photograms literally made with fire and or ice, as well as other materials. This one-of-a-kind silver gelatin print from the aforementioned series was one of my first prints made while testing out spinach as a photogram material (I know my processes have gotten a bit out there). I think of my photograms more in terms of sculpture, as I work my materials, layer by layer, and exposure by exposure. Pre-covid, I was mostly known for my infrared spiritual landscapes. The longer I work on my photograms, the more natural materials, I incorporate. They have organically morphed into alternative versions of spiritual landscapes, and do resemble my infrared work in some capacity. [My titles are important and have to come to me organically.] All of my images are about what something is, and what else it can be; the spiritual aspect of my work comes to me during my printing process, as well as while titling handmade prints, in the case of my photograms.

Kimberly Schneider is a Visual Artist, Educator, and Master Printer who has been dedicated to the art of the handmade (darkroom) print for the past 20+ years. Born in Chicago and based in New York, she has a fully functioning darkroom in her apartment, which is not something she takes lightly. Specializing in true infrared film, spiritual landscapes, and experimental photograms, she holds a BFA in photography (and a minor in philosophy) from Colorado State University; While both are deeply intertwined, she identifies as a Printer more than anything else. Kimberly began making photograms with handheld light sources in June 2020, due to having an unfinished darkroom in/taking over her apartment at the time; By sheer luck, or perhaps a matter of fate, the wet side of her current darkroom was essentially complete just 2 weeks prior to the shutdown (the dry side wouldn’t be touched for another 6 months). What began as a way to deal with both isolation and printing withdrawal (after losing her prior darkroom to NYC rent hikes in 2017), quickly led to her metamorphosis as an artist, as well as her current source of income (after losing her prior job to the pandemic in July 2020). Six bodies of work and several awards later, she not only teaches her experimental processes both remotely and in-person but has also been quite fortunate in the print sales department. And she couldn’t be more grateful. Schneider's silver gelatin prints have been exhibited (domestically) at Scott Nichols Gallery, Photo Forward Los Angeles, The Camera Obscura Gallery, SanDiego Art Institute, Lightbox Photographic Gallery, Stonehenge Gallery, Art Intersection, ZIA Gallery, The Photographer's Eye Collective, Photo Méthode Gallery, among other art galleries; She has also shown in Barcelona,Spain, as well as in Ireland (and virtually at The Louvre). She is honored to have work in the Collection of Susan Herzig & Paul Hertzmann, San Francisco, among private collectors, and also does custom commissions (privately) upon request.
