The idea of chaos and instability are at the heart of my art photography. I try to visually describe the instability of human existence through the use of multiple exposure photography.Today it seems like these themes are more current than ever. This Carousel is composed of 50 multiple images merged together in a composite, spanning time of minutes apart. The viewer can discover what occurred before and during one of the images they are looking at was taken. The artifacts are not halos; they are visual ghosts walking through the present. This technique deconstructs and reconstructs what we see in reality and creates a new visual experience. The end result is to create a photograph that you can see through; that allows the viewer to see multiple images and spatial elements at once from different angles, rather than a static still life image. The goal is not to reproduce the world as conventionally seen, but to create something new. My work challenges the viewers’ customary visual assumptions of the object, thereby freeing them to concentrate on its shape and color. I learned this technique from the master of impressionistic photography, the brilliant Catalan artist Pep Ventosa, who encourages the viewer to revisit everyday subjects and scenes, with a new and startling perspective.

Jacob Jay Garfinkel is an artist who lives and works in Jerusalem. He began his career in 1985 photographing famous men and women for magazine covers. From the early 1990's to 2001 he turned to street photography in order to look more carefully at the world and discover beauty in unusual places. Since 2001 his work is exclusively still life and landscape photography. A primary focus of his work is the coastal Mediterranean and seascapes. Although his subjects have changed, the exploration for form, color and texture remain the same.
