About The Artwork

This is a photogravure hand pulled on a traditional etching press. This is print number 1, part of a limited and varied edition of 11 prints, each with intentional differences resulting from the way I inked the copper plate. I used different colours, sometimes just black etching ink, sometimes with brownish ink. The image was made from a photograph I took in the Natural History Museum in London, that has a beautiful bilding constructed as a `cathedral to nature’. Please pay attention to the size of the paper with the white margin. Paper size: 13,4inches x 13,4 inches (34cm x 34cm) Print image size: 7,9 inches x 5,51inches (20cm x 14 cm) A photogravure is a print made by hand from a copper plate used as a matrix. The process, also called ‘photogravure on copper plate’, sometimes ‘heliogravure’, was developed in the 19th century. The technique involves working with a sensitised gelatine and etching a copper plate with a mordant that leaves a bas-relief in the metal. It is this bas-relief that will contain the ink that will be transferred to the paper by passing it through a press, in the same way as a ‘traditional’ etching. Today, it is possible to do this process from a digital image. The way the ink is transferred to the paper, intaglio style, provides a powerful surface to the print. Please, contact me if you have any questions.

Although I graduated from the National School of Fine Arts, I dedicated myself to philosophy for a long time working at the University of the Republic (Uruguay) until 2023. A few years ago I returned to my artistic activity with an important dedication to printmaking. When I began to incorporate photographic images, it felt natural for me to approach them in that context completely dominated by manual work. I quickly became interested in photogravure on copper plate and currently my artistic practice is focused on the combination of printmaking and photography, although not exclusively. I especially enjoy paying attention to material supports that give us a more tactile and intimate experience with photographic images. Procedures used in 19th century photography provide us with good tools for this and can be combined with contemporary techniques. Photogravure is one of these processes. It is as beautiful as it is cumbersome, but it gives the surface of the paper the character I am interested in. Proximity, materiality and smallness are aspects that I prefer to prioritise in our experience with images. Please, check the site photogravure.com It is an excellent source for spreading the word about this technique's place in the history of photography.
