These prints in both black & white and colour use a "hatching" technique that is reminiscent of the pre-photography era. Hatching was a technique formerly widely used used by engravers and other artists, using line to indicate texture, value, shading, modeling and the illusion of form and light. I used a hatching technique extensively when I worked as an illustrator and learned it by studying old woodcuts and etchings. For instance, I have been & continue to be inspired by the work of Thomas Bewick (1753 – 1828), whose art is considered the pinnacle of wood engraving. So this series of prints builds on work I did many years ago and is a return to my love of studying west coast landscapes and translating them into hatched lines.
