About The Artwork

Inspiration and the Act Of Creation I am inspired by the natural world and the way that humans interact with it. Of particular interest are industrial objects and how they can be reinterpreted in new and unexpected way. Quite often, it is as much a thought process, that Eureka moment, as it is the actual physical act of creating the art. In this particular sculpture, the classic diving helmet, an object that is typically made of metal, has been reimagined using wood. This creates an interesting contrast between the natural material and the industrial form. The segmented construction of the sculpture adds to this effect, as it draws attention to the individual pieces of wood that make up the whole. The specific type of diving helmet is also significant. The Mark V diving helmet was used by the United States Navy in the early 20th century. It was a heavy and cumbersome piece of equipment, but it allowed divers to explore the depths of the ocean in a way that was not possible before. The sculpture of the Mark V diving helmet can therefore be seen as a tribute to the ingenuity and courage of the early divers who explored the ocean depths. It is also a reminder of the power of nature and the human desire to understand it.

Hailing from the rugged Oregon coast, Gray brings a touch of the Pacific Northwest's raw beauty to his current home in Georgia, infusing each piece with a unique sense of place and story. Gray's artistic journey began on the vibrant gallery scene of Oregon and Washington, where his work quickly gained recognition. Sales at prestigious venues like the Art Colony at Tubac, AZ, and Kayenta Art Village in Ivins, UT, solidified his reputation as an emerging talent. His artistic prowess has been lauded with numerous awards, culminating in the distinction of being the highest-grossing artist for the Brian Scott Gallery, a premier gallery, in Brookings, Oregon, in 2017. Gray's signature style, "Sculpturning," elevates segmented woodturning to a new level of artistic expression. By meticulously refining and reassembling simple forms, Gray breathes life into reclaimed wood, transforming it into intricate sculptures that echo the essence of nature. While Gray has created traditional bowls and vases, his true passion lies in disparate forms, such as a limited series inspired by antique diving helmets, bells inspired by early America, as well as forms that explore social commentary. These captivating works, which have graced the pages of print and virtual magazines, are evocative windows into a world of mystery and imagination. Gray's commitment to sharing his craft extends beyond the studio. He has conducted demonstrations at the Brian Scott Gallery's "Artistic License" event and held the esteemed title of Artist of the Month at the Chetco Public Library. Notably, his exhibition "A segment of Art" was showcased by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts in 2021, further solidifying his position as a leading voice in contemporary woodturning. Gray's work is a testament to the transformative power of artistic vision. By meticulously reimagining natural materials, he crafts mesmerizing sculptures that resonate with a timeless elegance. Whether adorning a private collection, a yacht, or gracing a gallery wall, each piece whispers of the artist's deep connection to nature and his unwavering passion for pushing the boundaries of his craft.
