A unique collection of four handmade bottles which can either be a standalone feature ornament or could be used as a bookend. There is a full range of stunning metallic colours including flashes of bronze, and other shades as shown in the images. There is also texture to some of the surfaces. After the first (bisque) firing various earthenware glazes were applied with some additional oxides included in the barrel used for the reduction process. The bottles were rapidly heated up to 960°C, then placed in a barrel filled with combustible material, covered with wood shavings, and allowed to smoke. The amount of oxygen that is allowed during the firing and cooling process affects the resulting colour of the glaze and the amount of crackle. Generally my practice is to starve oxygen by placing a lid on the barrel after 1-3 minutes. The process is unpredictable in this instance it resulted in an interesting range of colours and effects. What is Raku? Raku firing is a traditional Japanese pottery technique known for its unpredictability and unique results. It is often characterized by its crackled glaze and vibrant colors, making it a sought-after art form for many collectors and enthusiasts. For information, a piece such as this will take anything up to 12+ hours to make from start to finish.

I have been a ceramicist for more than 30 years. 99% of my work is made using coils, slabs and pinch pots with the occasional use of extruded forms and aslip casting. The emphasis of my work is scupltural and ornamental rather than utlitarian. I have a particular interest in the fusing and melding of glass to ceramics and this body of work is collected from as far afield as the Middle East and USA.
